My latest writing for IAI – Istituto Affari Internazionali examines the stakes during US president Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to the Gulf. Besides the economic hype — and anticipated deals — which will inject optimism in the American economy, there will also be realpolitik at play.
The state of the global economic order and regional stability (particularly on Iran and Gaza) will be raised when Trump meets the Gulf heads of state in Riyadh.
But for Washington, apart from the lavish welcome expected for POTUS, the Trump administration will ascertain whether Gulf Arab leaders are able to make “strategic choices” in specific sectors.
